How To Cook Basmati Rice

An Easy Way to Perfect White Rice

A lot of people find rice to be intimidating to cook, but it’s quite simple and the less you think about it, the better it will probably taste!

This recipe is specifically for boiled white rice, as brown rice takes longer to cook, and will not work well if sticky rice is called for in a recipe (ie., Asian dishes such as sushi, kimbap, mango sticky rice, bibimbap). You can use this simple method for any long or short-grain rice.

Keep in mind that the ratio to cooking rice is 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. So adjust as needed for the amount you plan to cook.

Get your saucepan and let’s get started!

directions

  1. Drizzle the olive oil in the saucepan, turn your stove to high heat, then add the 2 cups of rinsed basmati rice.

  2. While the stovetop is heating up, mix the rice around in the oil coating the rice well.

  3. Now add 4 cups of water, stirring the rice through it so there arent any clumps.

  4. If using salt, add it now. Mix well.

  5. Allow your water to boil on high heat for about 5 minutes, without a lid.

  6. At this point, you can turn your heat to low, stir the rice well, and cover the saucepan partially, allowing some steam to escape.

  7. Continue to boil the rice for another 6-8 minutes, checking in a couple of times to stir. Rice can stick to the bottom of the pan, so I like to always mix it to ensure it’s not sticking.

  8. The water should now be evaporated more so the consistency of rice is like a thick porridge - more rice than water. If yours looks like this, you can turn the stove off, leaving the pan on the burner and the lid completely on. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then check on it and stir it.

  9. After those 10 minutes are up, the rice should be completely cooked without any liquid remaining.

**If after the 10 minutes is up, the rice is still too wet and undercooked, turn the stove back to low and cover for 3-5 more minutes. Stirring often.

**If the rice is dry and still undercooked (water has evaporated with rice sticking to the pan), add 1/2 a cup of water and let it sit covered on low heat for 3 minutes - stirring often so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
